Computing for Science

Theoretical computation is an essential part of modern scientific research methods. In scientific research, theoretical computation can allow people to study or simulate natural phenomena impossible or intractable through experimental means. It can also allow people to estimate possible experimental results at a lower cost and with higher efficiency, and verify the experimental results. Theoretical computations for science have diverse requirements for computing resources, including computing capability, memory size, communication bandwidth and storage IO. Therefore, building a complete and general computing platform for science often requires a higher cost and longer period. Besides, due to the diversity of computing jobs, these platforms have higher failure rates and complexity, and require more to maintain and operate.

Based on advanced supercomputers, extensive scientific computing software and a customized one-stop computing service platform (HPCPlus) for science, Shanghai Supercomputer Center (SSC) provides sustainable high performance computing resources and technical services for thousands of researchers and academic projects across China. With the support of SSC, numerous numerical computing problems in academic research have been solved, and lots of outstanding accomplishments in basic science such as physics, chemistry, astronomy, biology, materials, and genes are achieved along with a large number of papers published in top academic journals such as “Nature”, “Science” and other journals with a SCI impact factor over 10.
