Being an important information infrastructure funded by Shanghai Municipal Government. Shanghai Supercomputer Center (SSC) is the first public service platform for high performance computing in China. Since it was founded and officially opened to the public at the end of 2000, SSC has successively deployed a number of powerful supercomputers, including Dawning 4000A, which was ranked No.10 in the TOP500 list of supercomputers in 2004, and the “Magic Cube” supercomputer (Dawning 5000A) ranked No.10 in the world and No.1 in the Asia in 2009. At present, SSC has two supercomputers, the Magic Cube II” supercomputer with 399TFlops peak performance and the “Magic Cube III” supercomputer with 3.3PFlops peak performance, running for service with a total computing capacity of 3.7PFlops.
Hummingbird
In June 2012, Shanghai Supercomputer Center deployed an IBM cluster system with a peak performance of 21TFlops, which includes 65 HS23 computing blades, to serve industrial users. By users’ voting, the computer cluster was named “Hummingbird”.
Magic Cube (Dawning 5000A)
In the TOP500 list of global supercomputers released in June 2009, the “Magic Cube” supercomputer was ranked No.10. This is also the second time that China’s supercomputer was listed in top 10 in the world and ranked first in Asia for the first time. During the lifetime of the Magic Cube supercomputer with an average utilization over 70%, SSC served thousands of R&D groups, completed approximately 5.7 million computing jobs, and supplied more than 1 billion CPU core hours. SSC’s HPC service and applications are in the leading position in China.
Dawnging 4000A
In November 2004, the Dawning 4000A supercomputer, as one of achievements of the National High Technology Research and Development Program (“863” Program) of China, was deployed in Shanghai Supercomputer Center. The peak performance of the Dawning 4000A reached 10.2TFlops, and was ranked No.10 in the global supercomputer TOP500 list released in June 2004. This is the first time that China’s supercomputer was listed in top 10 in the world. China has become the third country which has the capability of developing and applying 10TFlops supercomputer after the United States and Japan. On August 18, 2005, Shanghai Supercomputer Center was listed as “Main Node of China National Grid”, and the Dawning 4000A supercomputer therefore became the strongest computing power of China National Grid.
Shenwei New Century-64P
In June 2003, the “Shenwei” New Century-64P computer cluster, the peak performance of which is 302GFlops, was on line for service in Shanghai Supercomputer Center. It is the first general-purpose computer cluster system deployed in SSC, and served the industrial engineering fields such as automobile design, large-scale civil engineering, aerospace, shipbuilding, etc.
Shenwei-I
The Shenwei-I supercomputer is the first supercomputer put into service at Shanghai Supercomputer Center. Its architecture is MPP, and peak performance is 384GFlops. Researchers, engineers and technicians achieved many important application results using this supercomputer. For example, in 2001, Shanghai Meteorological Service used Shenwei-I to provide accurate numerical weather forecasts for APEC summit; in 2003, Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica of Chinese Academy of Sciences conducted calculations on Shenwei-I to discover drugs against the SARS virus.
